- Marie biscuits first appeared in south Africa as far back as 1898 when the Baumann family acquired a 2nd biscuit making plant capable of producing ‘fancy biscuits’. It is said, however, that the Marie biscuit was first produced in 1895 by British biscuit makers peek frean, and named in honour of the then duke of Edinburgh's bride – “Marie”.
